ER and Family Practice staffing shortages
Canadian hospitals are grappling with significant staffing shortages in emergency rooms and family practices, leading to pressure on existing staff and closure of some ERs.
Increasing patient loads and physician burnout
With a rising number of patients, doctors are experiencing heightened burnout as they juggle demanding workloads and administrative tasks, making it challenging to provide consistent, quality care.
Lengthy and complex international recruitment process
The process of recruiting internationally is often complex and slow, with strict regulations and extensive paperwork, which can delay the onboarding of much-needed healthcare professionals.

In 2022, only 23.9% of international doctors secured residency positions through the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS), compared to a 92% match rate for graduates of Canadian medical schools.
This disparity highlights the complexities and barriers within the international recruitment process, including limited residency spots and stringent certification requirements.
Canada is grappling with a shortage of family doctors, with an estimated deficit of 13,845 family doctors as of 2024. This shortfall has led to approximately 6.5 million Canadians—about 22% of the population—lacking access to a regular family doctor or nurse practitioner.
Many are turning to emergency departments for non-urgent care, exacerbating wait times & straining hospital resources. Between April 2023 & March 2024, 15% of ER visits were for conditions that could have been managed by a primary care provider.
